CAPS subject guide

Mathematics: make the next step clearer.

Choose a grade and topic for an explanation, a related question and focused practice. This guide lists common topic areas by phase; it is not an exhaustive textbook.

Mathematics across the CAPS phases.

Choose the learner's school grade. The listed topics describe Kwazi's current map; an adult should check explanations against the teacher's materials.

Foundation phase

Grades R–3

An adult can ask Kwazi to break down counting, addition, subtraction and place value using small examples. Shapes, patterns, measurement and time are also in the topic map.

  • Counting and number names
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Place value
  • Shapes and patterns
  • Measurement and time

Intermediate phase

Grades 4–6

Ask for steps in whole-number calculations, multiplication, division and fractions, or discuss a shape or a data table. Kwazi can suggest a related question to practise the same method.

  • Whole numbers
  • Common fractions
  • Decimal fractions
  • Multiplication and division
  • Geometry of 2D shapes
  • Data handling

Senior phase

Grades 7–9

Use Kwazi to explain an integer calculation, simplify an expression or work through an equation. Ask why a geometry step follows, or compare financial maths and probability examples with the class method.

  • Integers
  • Exponents
  • Algebraic expressions
  • Equations
  • Geometry of straight lines
  • Financial maths
  • Data handling and probability

FET phase

Grades 10–12

Explore functions, trigonometry, geometry, sequences, finance, statistics and calculus. Ask for the reasoning behind a step and review it against the textbook or an official NSC memo where available.

  • Algebra and equations
  • Functions and graphs
  • Number patterns and sequences
  • Trigonometry
  • Euclidean geometry
  • Analytical geometry
  • Finance, growth and decay
  • Probability
  • Statistics
  • Differential calculus

Try a teaching prompt

Ask for the method, then check understanding.

Grade 8 Mathematics: explain why adding 2 to both sides of 3x − 2 = 7 gives 3x = 9. Then give a similar equation to practise.

Use a synthetic or anonymised question. Compare the explanation with your teacher’s method and textbook. AI can make mistakes; Kwazi’s safety and format checks do not guarantee every answer is correct.

Follow the topic through

Use a follow-up to ask for a smaller explanation or a harder question on the same topic. The lesson carries the earlier question and explanation into that request. Progress records activity by subject and day.

Try five free questions

Then R10 per wallet-funded question, including requested follow-ups. Adults operate live tutoring; under-18 live AI access remains blocked.
